SJC's Core Curriculum

Saint Joseph's College's Core Curriculum was a general education sequence of 10 courses students take over their four years alongside their major courses. It emphasized an interdisciplinary approach to education that placed often disparate subjects (e.g. history, literature, science, theology, politics, etc.) into a curriculum that focused on helping students form their own worldview based in reason, their own beliefs and views, and a historical framework. As an instructor in the curriculum, I liked to think about it in the way that Dr. Michael Nichols would talk about Core: Your major was there to help you make a good living, Core was there to help you live a good life. Read more about the Core Curriculum in this write-up from 2008 in Commonweal Magazine: "The Saga of Saint Joseph's".
